Louis van Gaal will get Wayne Rooney back
to his best and terrorising defenders again, according to former
team-mate Rio Ferdinand, ESPN reports.
Ferdinand, 35, has seen both sides of the
talented Manchester United striker: the angry young man and the calmer
but less influential elder statesmen in the squad, and is optimistic he
is ready to return to his creative best.
Ferdinand says Rooney has become a calmer
player in recent years but witness what he was like as a “very angry
young man” during the early days of his career at United.
“He seems to fly into a rage about the
smallest thing and went through mobile phones like they were sweets,”
Ferdinand said. “He’d smash phones up in frustration, throwing them on
the concrete. Other players used to laugh about it.
“I don’t know what happened but he did calm down.”
Rooney scored one and set up another for
United on Sunday as they strolled to a 4-0 victory – their first
competitive win of the season – against Ferdinand’s Queens Park Rangers
at Old Trafford.
He has been made captain by Van Gaal but
faces stiff competition for places with Radamel Falcao and Robin van
Persie also fighting for first-choice forward roles.
