The Abia State Command of the
Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps on Friday paraded three
suspected oil pipeline vandals arrested at Kilometer 79.5 of the
petroleum pipeline located at Ahiaba-Obi village in Isialangwa North
local government area of the state.
Parading the suspects in Umuahia, the state Commandant of NSCDC , Mr. Andy Dateer, decried incessant attacks on oil pipelines by miscreants.
Dateer lamented that youths who should rather be concerned about the safety of public property in their vicinity rather prefer vandalising them for personal interests thereby sabotaging the economy of the country.
He gave the names of the suspects as Onyekachi Nwachukwu , 20; Nwokeoma Chima, 19; and Chinedu Ochogbu, 22; all from the same council.
One of the suspects, Nwachukwu, in an interview with The PUNCH, denied he was a vandal, saying he was arrested while trying to market 150 liters of petrol given to him by a friend to sell for him.
He however became speechless when he was asked why he decided to undertake such errand considering the risks as he was not a licensed petrol dealer.
NSCDC also paraded three other suspects arrested while allegedly tampering with the oil pipeline at Ekeoba Ohuhu in Umuahia North council of the state.
The suspects, Chikwendu Adimoha, 27, from Umudiawa village in Ohuhu; Emeka Okaome, 45; and another unidentified suspect said to have been hospitalised following injuries he sustained in a fight with NSCDC operatives, were picked following a tip-off.
In the same vein, NSCDC paraded one Justin Ogbuagu, a native of Otutu in Arochukwu council area of the state, said to have been arrested while allegedly stealing diesel from a base station belonging to a telecommunications company.
The NSCDC boss said the suspect was arrested on September 9, about 2:30 am during an operational patrol by his men.
But the suspect told newsmen that he was only arrested after his neighbour and enemy accused him of stealing oil from the base station, an allegation he said was false.
