Miley Cyrus made big waves when she brought a homeless
man as her date to the MTV Video Music Awards in August… Not only did
his speech on her behalf move the crowd to tears, but sadly, it also
landed him behind bars.
Jesse Helt has been sentenced to six months in jail for violating his
terms of probation in Oregon. The 22-year-old turned himself into
officials when an outstanding search warrant for his arrest was
publicized in the tabloids after his stint at the VMAs.
The trial took place Yesterday and although he told the judge he’d
“like to be viewed as a good person, not as a nuisance to society” and
asked for leniency, he ended up being led away in handcuffs.
Helt was originally arrested in 2010 for misdemeanor charges of
criminal trespassing and criminal mischief. The following year, he
failed to meet with his probation officer or complete community service
because he moved to Los Angeles to pursue modeling–the time during which
he became homeless.
Cyrus met him at a shelter earlier this year
in her work with My Friends Place, and although her heart was in the
right place, publicity from his appearance at the VMAs ultimately
brought the probation violation to light.
Miley assured fans that Helt is still a good person, tweeting to her
fans to instead focus on the importance of youth homelessness.
