Church building collapses in Benin

A storey building belonging to Christ Chosen Church of God located at Usama Street, Uzebu quarters, Benin, yesterday collapsed, killing one person and trapping two others.
Three persons were rescued alive but the fourth person was brought out dead after three hours of rescue operation.

Two bodies are still trapped in the debris, according to survivors who were brought out with broken limbs.
The building, which served as offices, and residential building to officials in the church was being demolished by hired workers when it collapsed.
It was learnt that nine workers hired at N3000 per day were working in the building but three went out to eat before the building came down.
Following the incident, angry residents set a bus belonging to the church ablaze and destroyed the main church auditorium.
They blamed the church for using manual labour to demolish the building instead of hiring the services of an excavator.
“They church asked us to demolish the building. Four were inside the church when it came down. We had pulled down the upper part. We were removing the blocks when the remaining part of the building came down. This is my first day. We did not see the pastor and others again. They were here when the building collapsed,” one of the lucky survivors who refused to gave his name told journalists at the site of the collapsed building yesterday.
